Description

TQ 67 41 BRENCHLEY HIGH STREET, BRENCHLEY
(north side)
15/91 Garden walls and railings
west and south of Portobello
including pedestrian gate
and piers to carriage gate
GV II

Garden walls, railings, garden gate and piers to carriage gate. Probably C18
or early C19 in origin with late C19 ironwork. Garden walls Flemish bond
brick, the section to the south on a ragstone plinth. Cast iron railings and
gate piers.

Plan: The wall and railings form the boundary to the garden west and in front
of Portobello (q.v.), the gate piers flank the entrance to the Cottage (q.v.),
formerly the stable block, with a further section of wall to the garden to the
south.

Exterior: Low brick walls to the garden immediately in front of the house
with iron railings with verticals of square section with elaborate spear
finails ornamented with scrolls; similar design to garden gate. The gate
piers flanking the gateway to the cottage are fluted columns with depressed
bulbous finials, one is stamped Hill and Smith, Baterley Hill.

Included for group value with Portobello and a contribution to the streetscape
of an outstandingly attractive village.
