Description

House, first constructed in C16, re-fronted, heightened and altered internally in the early C19, with later alterations and addition. It was restored in the late C20; now a commercial premises.

MATERIALS: the front range is rendered; the south-west return is painted, coursed, squared limestone rubble and English bond brickwork; the rear is stuccoed. The roof to the front range is tiled and has brick stacks below the ridge to the rear.

PLAN: it has a double-depth front range, originally single depth, with a later parallel rear extension.

EXTERIOR: the building is two storeys with attics to the front range. The front elevation is a six-window range. The left-end bay has a carriageway which has lateral beams with three-inch chamfers, and a sash window above. Two rusticated pilaster strips flank the remaining five first-floor windows. The central entrance has a late-C20 doorcase of pilaster strips, fluted lintel and cornice and a C20 timber eight-panel door. To the left of the entrance is an early C19-style, bowed shop front with a cornice and glazing bars; to the right are two horned, six-over-six-pane sash windows. There are matching first-floor windows, and three late-C20 dormers.

INTERIOR: it is reported to have a six-bay, C16 roof with tie beams, cambered collars and queen posts, and an C18 fireplace. The central through passage is divided by an elliptical arch, leading to a top-lit stair hall containing an open winder, dogleg stair with a curtail, stick balusters and round-arched niches at the half landing.

History

The building formerly had a Greek Revival-style doorway with pilasters to an entablature and pediment.
