GV II*

Cotton doubling mills and warehousing, forming part of
Muarray's Mills (with Old Mill, Decker Mill and New Mill, qv),
and added to the site in 1842. Brick with slate roofs, and
internal construction (in Fireproof Mill) of cast iron columns
and beams in Doubling Mill. The 2 mills form an L-shaped block
of 5 storeys. Fireproof Mill (facing Bengal Street) is 7 bays
with entrance to yard to left; Doubling Mill is of 8 bays,
with internal engine house occupying 2 bays to W of site,
marked by round-arched windows. Other bays each contain small
window with flat arched stone head. Circular stair-tower
attached to rear of Doubling Mill, towards E, and small
ventilation tower projecting from rear of Fireproof Mill.
Included as significant components of Murrays Mills, an
important example of large scale mill development of the early
C19.
