Description

BURNLEY

SD83SW COLNE ROAD
906-1/3/46 (East side)
St Andrew's School

GV II

School. 1866 (preceding the church (qv) and probably serving
as both church and school); former south wing apparently
demolished. Coursed sandstone rubble, slate roof. Gothic
style, with steeply pitched roofs. Asymmetrical T-plan formed
by 8-bay main range on east-west axis with a long south wing
attached to the 2nd bay.
Single storey. Both gables of the main range have a large
2-centred arched 3-light window with circular tracery,
hood-mould with figured stops and polychrome arch-band, a
small spherical-triangle in the apex and gable coping with an
apex cross; the north side of this range has square-headed
2-light windows with double-chamfered surrounds and shouldered
lights, and towards the east end a doorway with overlight in
this style, all with linked hood-moulds; the south side has a
shouldered doorway with chamfered surround to the bay west of
the wing, and 4 windows east of it like those on the north
side, one of them with a doorway breaking into its lower right
corner. The south wing has 4 similar 2-light windows, a
shouldered doorway between the 3rd and 4th, and a chimney on
the west slope of the gable.
INTERIOR not inspected.
Forms a group with Church of St Andrew (qv); included for
group value.
