Description

WEYMOUTH

SY6683 DORCHESTER ROAD, Broadwey
873-1/8/423 (East side)
14/06/74 Nos.566A AND 566B
School House
(Formerly Listed as:
DORCHESTER ROAD, Broadwey
Broadwey Primary School)

GV II

Primary school, now semi-detached houses. 1839. Coursed and
squared stone, tile roofs. The original simple hipped
building, immediately opposite the Church of St Nicholas (qv),
has later gabled ranges at either end, the front wall in a
continuous plane immediately at the pavement rear.
The main building is in 1 storey with attic, and has three C20
dormers above 3 wood casements of 3, 2 and 3 lights, with
transom; the lights above the transom have pointed tracery
bars, and there are stopped labels. The plinth dies to the
pavement, left, with the rise in the street, and there is a
stack to the rear. To the left the gable end has a C20 3-light
casement at each level, and the return has a dormer above a
swept-down roof section over a door and window. The right end
is similar, with late C20 windows.
The unusual Gothick casements were clearly the work of the
joiner for the windows to Lorton Farmhouse (qv).
INTERIOR: not inspected.
