Formerly 3 houses. Late C18 with early C19 alterations. The main block is of
3 storeys painted brick, 1st and 2nd floor strings, flat moulded wood frieze,
heavy gutter cornice, slate roof. A 5 bay front. The windows have architrave
frames, the centre window on 1st floor has a moulded eared architrave a small
entablature and pediment. The ground floor windows have no glazing bars. 6-Panelled
centre door with semi-circular fanlight with elaborate intersecting wood glazing
in doorcase of engaged Roman Doric columns with flanking half pilasters, the
inner one supporting the architrave of the arched opening, broken entablature
carried round outside pilaster, with triglyph frieze and open pediment with panelled
soffit. This door opens into a small lobby with panelled dado and a half glazed door on the opposite wall with arched radiating fanlight over. Extension to
left hand, 3 storeys and attic, probably refronting of older house taller than
main building. Similar materials and strings. 3 dormer windows with moulded
cornice and pediments, 3 bay front. The ground floor windows have had glazing
bars removed. Extension to right hand No 55. C18, 3 storeys and attic. Composite
pilasters at angles, 2 early C.19 1 storey angular bays on 1st floor. C19 shop
and yard entrance on ground floor. Only the upper floors of No 36 belong to
Hotel. The ground and basement floors are Nos 36A and 36B and the whole of No
36 is described under the latter heading as separate item.
All the listed buildings on the East Side form a group.
