House. C18. Red brick in Flemish bond, roofed with handmade
red clay tiles. Entrance range facing SW, with 2 axial stacks,
and single-storey extension with hipped roof to left. Wing to
rear right, facing SE, with 2 axial stacks, and another wing
to left of the rear end, of which the right part is early C19,
the left part late C19, the brickwork keyed in. The whole
forms a half-H plan.
EXTERIOR: 2 storeys. The SW elevation has on the ground floor
three C19 casements in original apertures with flat arches of
gauged brick, one inserted casement, and one sash of 6+3
lights with a similar arch; and on the first floor six C19
casements. C20 half-glazed door with moulded flat canopy on 2
stanchions. Sun firemark attached to wall above canopy. The SE
elevation has on the ground floor one C20 bay with a French
window, one sash of 3+6 lights in an altered aperture, one
similar sash in an original aperture with a flat arch of
gauged brick and 2 original sashes with shallow segmental
arches of gauged brick; the sashes each have a single hinged
light. On the first floor are 3 casements in original
apertures with flat arches of gauged brick, one large sash of
2+2 lights inserted 1989 with a course of vertical bricks
above, and 3 original sashes of 6+6 lights each with a single
hinged light. Half-glazed 6-panel door at right end. Straight
joint between the 5 sashes at right and the remainder. Fully
hipped roofs. Moated site. In 1768 P Morant reported that an
octagonal mansion house built for John Morecroft `after an
Italian model' stood nearby; its site is 100m SE of the
present house. Shown as in the occupation of Mr Wright in J
Cary's Survey of the High Roads from London.
