Late C18 - early C19, thoroughly refurbished 1986. Stucco on brick, slate roof.
The lodge faces east and comprises 2 buildings separated by a carriageway which is
roofed and has a large arch front and back. Each block is a mirror plan of the
other. The carriageway is flanked by 1-room plan lodges, with end stacks and 2
storeys high. On each end are contemporary small single storey rooms narrower than
the main rooms and set back front and back.
Symmetrical front with a 2-window front each side of the arch. The main rooms
project forward from the arch and flanking wings. It has a plain plinth and a plat
band at first floor level. The walls between have channelled rustication. Single
window central on each floor; a 2-light casement with lattice pattern of timber
glazing bars with a stucco eared architrave resting on a pair of small bulbous-
shaped consoles. Projecting eaves cornice over a dentil frieze. Low-pitch pediment
over also has dentil frieze. At the time of survey the building was undergoing
extensive repairs and the limestone finial and stone ornaments from each end of the
coping have been temporarily removed. The low rooms each side have similar stucco
finish but without the dentil frieze. The centre portion here is broken forward
slightly with pediment over and contains a single-light window with plain
rectangular architrave. The roof is gable-ended. The central archway is most
impressive. It is a tall round-headed arch. It is carried on half-engaged square-
section columns with fielded panel sides and capitals decorated with foliage and
scrolls. The arch is framed by a moulded architrave and there is another horizontal
moulding over. There are stucco wreaths in the spandrels. The eaves, cornice and
dentil frieze is carried over the top at the same level as the flanking blocks. The
archway is surmounted by a massive carving in limestone of the Rolle arms on a
panelled pedestal. The rear elevation is identical to the front. Inside the
archway each side of the flanking blocks contains a central doorway; a single panel
door with a stucco pediment hood on ornate scroll consoles.
Interiors completely rebuilt 1986 including roof structures.
From each end low walls sweep forward in gentle curves to terminal piers. The walls
are brick with stucco channelled rustication and limestone weathered coping. The
piers are also stucco on brick. They are square in section with moulded base on a
plinth and pedimented caps.
Sidmouth Lodge was the main entrance to Bicton Park.
