Description

SKELMERSDALE

SD40NE ELMERS GREEN LANE
783-1/1/18 (East side)
Barn approximately 15 metres west of
Widdows Farmhouse

GV II

Barn, now garage and store. Probably late C17 or early C18;
altered. Coursed thin sandstone rubble and coursed squared
sandstone, stone slate roof. L-plan formed by a 3-bay main
range on a north-south axis with an outshut to the east side
of north bay, and an added bay at the south end. On the east
side the wall of the main range is mostly of thin rubble but
the upper part is of coursed squared masonry, and the south
bay is entirely of this material. The original centre bay has
opposed waggon doorways; the re-entrant of the outshut has
inserted garage doorway, the 1st bay has a square-headed
doorway at ground floor and loading door above, and the south
gable of the added bay has a square-headed doorway near the
front corner and circular pitching hole above. The west side
(to the road), which is all of coursed squared masonry, has 2
slit breathers each side of the waggon doorway.
