Former GWR School

(formerly listed as Now fire and emergency services depot (formerly GWR School), Church Place)

II
This is the former infants’ school of 1857, by Moffatt and Scott, the only remnant of the former school. The school closed in 1879 and the earlier school buildings of 1843-1844 were demolished in 1881 and the former infants’ school became the works’ laboratory. In 1883, a single-storey extension for the GWR’s horse-drawn wagons was built to the north. Rock-faced snecked rubble in black mortar, with ashlar limestone quoins. Slate roof with apex rooflights. Single storey, four bays of paired shouldered lights. Slightly projecting stacks diminishing at eaves offsets.
