Public house, unoccupied at time of survey. c1767, with C19
alterations. Painted sandstone rubble with brick chimney caps
and slate roof. Built at rear of Nos 10 & 12 Market Street
(qv), facing New Inn Yard.
The left-hand part of the facade is of 3 storeys and has one
bay with paired sashed windows separated by a central mullion
and with projecting sills, the top left window blocked. To the
left, in the angle with the rear wall of No.10 where it is
carried over the yard entrance, is a tall stair window with a
doorway below on the ground floor. The roof line continues to
the right, but the facade is set back and is of 4 storeys plus
cellars and of 2 main bays.
The left-hand bay has paired sashed windows with a central
mullion and projecting sills, the 1st-floor sashes have
glazing bars, and the top floor a casement window with plain
reveals. The right-hand bay has a single window to each floor,
some sashes and some casements with plain reveals, and
doorways to the left and to the right. At the left a slated
lean-to roof forms an open porch. Above is a tall stair window
with glazing bars. Below the roof there are doorways in the
main facade and in the return wall of the left-hand
projection. Above the former doorway is a stone tablet
inscribed: 'I H I' (John and Isabel Hodgson).
INTERIOR not inspected, but roof known to contain re-used
cruck timbers.
