Two houses, one build. Early C18. Coursed herringbone-tooled sandstone with raised
quoins. Pantiled roof with stone copings and kneelers; brick stacks, one rendered.
2 storeys and attic on a full-height basement, revealed by removal of buildings
in front. Small window inserted in The Retreat. 3 bays in all. Entrance to rear.
Ground floor 3-light 24-pane windows with central opening sashes. First floor early
C19 6-pane sashes. Traces of earlier, lower (probably stone-mullioned) windows.
The Retreat has a raking dormer with Yorkshire sash. Right return of Guides Cottage
shows top-glazed boarded door, in narrow-chamfered alternating-block surround with
heavy lintel, at basement level. Small windows on upper floors, all but one in
old chamfered openings. Small curved kneelers to gable copings.
