House. Mid-C16, c1600, C19, C20. Timber-frame, part exposed,
part rendered, roofs peg-tiled. L-shaped plan of 2 blocks with
rear linking stair tower and early out-shut to one unit and
C20 addition. Exterior chimney-stack to each block.
EXTERIOR: 2 storeys. Front SW elevation. Rendered mostly with
imitation timber-framing of large panels, end wall posts
original. 3 window range, all windows except 2 are C20
casements with diamond leaded panes. Ground floor two 2-light
windows with C20 timber-framed and rendered gabled porch in
centre. Door C20 boarded stable type. First floor, three
2-light windows, end stacks seen to NW and SE. NW elevation
exposed timber-framing with truncated stack to SW.
Timber-framed lean-to to NE end with brick cladding of NE end
wall. Ground floor, SW-NE single light casement, stack, 2
single light casements. Row of prominent large peg holes in
studding below. Out-shut C20, boarded stable door. First
floor, to NE of stack, mullioned window, one mullion old but
inserted. C20 2-light casement. Rear NE elevation, 3 principal
units, NW-SE range seen in front elevation, to NW, gable end
of block of NW elevation with lean-to out-shut in front with
C19 replacement of NE wall in brick. Stair tower in internal
right angle, gabled roof, NW-SE axis. C20 brick flat roofed
addition between stair tower and principal range. Windows,
ground floor, NW-SE, C20 2-light casement in C19 segment
headed window aperture. Stair tower, single light C20 casement
and C20 door, upper glazing, 2x3 panes and 2 lower panels.
First floor, principal range has mullioned window of 3
principal mullions of C17 lozenge section with flat centres
and inner glazing rebates and minor mullions inbetween. Stair
tower SE face has apertures of 2-light window with mullions
missing. SE elevation. Rendered gable end of principal range,
C17, central stack of small bricks in irregular bond.
INTERIOR: 2 bayed block to N c1550, is earliest with blocked
mullioned window in NE end wall on first floor. Flat laid
joists with diminished haunched tenons, replaced by later
joists in W bay - early C17, deep section, lamb's tongue
stopped chamfers. At the same time S block of 2 bays
constructed at right angles using joists with diminished
haunches and pendant soffits with lamb's tongue chamfer stops.
Corridor between blocks leading from new front entry to
contemporary stair tower at rear. Doorways cut through early
block to allow free movement. Stair tower has octagonal newel
post and decorative finial and bearer rail to landing has
lamb's tongue chamfer stops. S stack added at this time. Also
N stack much rebuilt in C18/C19.
The house is remarkably similar in its units and their date to
nearby Hulletts (qv). Although the elements are put together
somewhat differently in plan, both houses have a symmetrical
elevation with contrived central front door and central
passage to a stair tower.
