LANCASTER

SD46SE ASHTON ROAD
1685-1/1/7 (West side)
18/02/70 Entrance gateway at Ripley St Thomas
School
(Formerly Listed as:
ASHTON ROAD
Lodge and adjacent entrance gateway
at Ripley St Thomas' School)

GV II

Entrance gateway. c1860. Probably by J Cunningham. Sandstone
ashlar with some polygonal masonry above the archways.
Consists of 4 piers: the inner ones flank the driveway and are
linked to the outer piers by pointed archways which form the
pedestrian entrances. These archways have steep coped gables
with fleur-de-lys finials, the gables rising from weathered
set-backs in the main piers. These piers have 8-sided stone
caps with poppyhead finials. The wrought-iron gates appear to
be original and incorporate scrolls and trefoiled arches.
