Bronze equestrian statue of 1846, by Matthew Coates Wyatt, originally placed
on the top of Decimus Burton's triumphal arch at Hyde Park Corner (London);
removed to the present site 1885. The figure of the Duke of Wellington is seated
on the standing horse, with his right arm outstretched holding a baton. The
horse's head projects forward. The stone base is rectangular, with a simple
plinth moulding, and a wider white stone platform at ground level. Surrounding
the monument are 16 guns, vertically arranged as an oval, the exposed muzzles
having metal caps to which are attached a continuous chain.
