Belle Vue Terrace

Row of 5 small town houses comprising a terrace of 4 and a 5th
attached. Early to mid C19 in 2 builds, Nos 106-112 before
1827; altered. Coursed squared sandstone (No.106 rendered),
slate roof on 2 levels. Rectangular double-depth plan, each
house single-fronted except No.114 at the right-hand end which
is double-fronted.
2 storeys over cellars (No.114 higher), 2+2+2+2+3 windows,
with moulded gutter cornices; doorways to the left except at
No.114 which is symmetrical, all with moulded architraves,
plain friezes and moulded cornices, those at Nos 108, 110 &
114 with recessed panelled doors (the others with altered
doors); and vertical-rectangular windows with raised sills and
plain surrounds, the lower left and upper right at No.114
containing 4-pane sashes but all the others with altered
glazing. Coped gables; 3 ridge chimneys (all cut down), and a
gable chimney to the left at No.114. The right-hand return
wall of No.114 has 2 windows at ground floor, 3 at 1st floor
and one to the attic. Rear: round-headed stair-windows; small
back extension to No.106.
INTERIOR not inspected.
HISTORY: in mid C19 these houses were occupied by business and
professional families; by the 1880s the cellars were leased as
separate dwellings. Good example of late Georgian
lower-middle-class town houses.
Forms group with Belle Vue Mill to the left (qv) at the
junction with Trafalgar Street.
