Part of Red Barracks, now block of 6 apartments. Early C19.
Flemish bond brickwork or rendered, slate roof. An L-plan
building in 2 linked parts.
EXTERIOR: the slightly lower range across the NW end has a
short 1-bay return to the higher range to the S, and is in 2
storeys, with three 9-pane sashes at first floor above 2 to
ground floor, with a former doorway, now blocked. In the
re-entrant angle is a hipped porch over panelled doors in each
direction. Above the door on the return is a small oculus. The
left-hand quoins are rendered, as is the return wall. At the
opposite end is a single sash at each level. The whole has a
low-pitched hipped roof.
The linked range is in 2 storeys, 3 windows; 12-pane sashes in
plain reveals to good brick voussoirs and stone sills, the
rendered back wall has 2 sashes at each level, and the outer
gable end is plain. The pyramidal roof has a finial, and is
set to a 2-course brick eaves band. The rear wall, facing the
harbour, has 12-pane sashes, 5 at first floor and 4 below, on
a rubble plinth.
INTERIOR: not inspected.
HISTORICAL NOTE: Red Barracks formed part of a chain of
one-troop cavalry stations along the south coast, planned by
the Barrack Master, General Col DeLancey. Part of an
externally complete group.
