2 houses. Circa early C18 extended to rear in circa mid C19. Front elevation
remodelled in circa mid C19. Painted and rendered stone rubble with asbestos slate
roof to front slope and rag slate roof to rear slope. Projecting truncated stone
rubble chimney stack in higher gable end. Rendered brick chimney stack in lower
gable end and in gable end of rear projecting wing. Projecting stone rubble rear
lateral hall stack with brick shaft.
Appears to have been a 3-room plan house originally with its back built into the
hillside and with gable end stacks and front lateral hall stack, and possibly a cross
passage. In circa mid C19 it was subdivided into 2 houses, heightened to 3 storeys,
re-orientated with the higher rear level becoming the front and a wing added at the
rear (original front) of the lower level. Alternatively it could simply be a pair of
2-storey houses built over cellars facing lower ground level at rear.
Mill Hill elevation of 2 storeys. Asymmetrical 3-window front. Ground floor with 2
C19 4-pane sashes, C19 doorcase with panelled pilasters and part glazed panelled
door. Flat hood. C19 4-pane sash to right. In right-hand range comprising The
Briar, part glazed C20 door and C20 casement with glazing bars, both beneath timber
lintels. First floor with three 4-pane sashes is gabled half-dormers. Rear
elevation asymmetrical with regular 3-storey wing at lower left-hand end.
Interior with probably C18 ceiling beams. The Briar and upper floor of Oversteps
not inspected.
