Description

SS 90 SE BROADCLYST

2/32 Lower Comberoy Farmhouse
- (formerly listed as Lower
11.11.52 Comeroy Farmhouse)
GV II

Farmhouse. C16 (or earlier) core with later additions and alterations. Cob, stone
plinth, rendered under gabled-end slate roof. Originally a 3-room, through-passage
plan, the lower end (to the left, ie. the front facing away from farmyard) retaining
remains of its medieval smoke-blackened roof. A huge inserted external lateral back
stack (with oven bulge) now heats the lower end; axial stack (at higher end of
Hall) and parlour end stack, all with brick shafts. A C19 extension recessed to the
lower end. 2 storeys throughout.
Front: scattered fenestration, five 2-light timber casement windows above, 6 panes
per light, lintels at eaves-line level; 1 doorway under pantiled open porch to left
of a 2-light and 4-light window, all 6-pane lights, all C19.
Rear: dominated by the large lateral stack and oven bulge. 2 entrances to the left
of this approached by external steps, both under canopies supported by console
brackets. The right-hand doorway (to passage) with planked door, with bead-moulded
jamb and lintel; scattered fenestration: four 2-light windows above, lintels at
eaves level; four 2 and 3-light windows below, all timber casements of the C19 and
C20. C19 right-hand extension with one 2-light window above, and a doorway
approached by steps.
Interior: Lower end fireplace blocked; 3 cross beams, the central one only
chamfered with run-out stops. Hall with one unchamfered axial beam. Parlour with 2
axial beams, chamfered with run-out stops; the front window has a shallow C19 window
arch, the rear window with internal panelled shutters.
Roof: 3-bay medieval roof, 2 principals, probably raised crucks, and a hip cruck,
all smoke-blackened: principals differ from each other : higher-end truss closed,
blades yoked and side-pegged at apex; lower end truss, side-pegged and morticed with
cambered collar. Ridge-piece and trenched purlins. Comberoy was known formerly as
'Lower Comberoy'.
