GV II

House. c1847 for Peter Cleophas the College Butler (Matthews
(1959) 161). Grey brick with stucco door surround and steep
hipped slate roof, bellcast, projecting eaves and plastered
soffit. A tall double-fronted double-pile plan house facing S.
2-storeys above a basement, 5-windows wide. Symmetrical front
with close-spaced recessed sash windows of 6/6 panes. Chamfered
window openings and gauged brick flat arches. Ground floor
sashes with 2/2 larger panes. Half-glazed front door up 4 steps,
wider heavy pilastered stucco doorcase with channelled brackets,
full entablature and stepped blocking course. Lower 2-storeys
shallow lean-to servants wing at rear. A tall square house
prominent in the group at the entrance to Haileybury College.
