House. 1913 by Bennett and Bidwell in the Arts and Crafts manner showing the
influence of Baillie Scott. 1 1/2 storeys. Simple rectangular plan with
projecting loggia (now enclosed to form sun room) on the south-west corner.
Roughcast brick walls. Tile roof swept to 1st floor to emphasise gabled blocks.
Jettied first floor in projecting bedroom wing with tiled corbels. Gabled,
north-west (rear) elevation. Hipped and flat roofed dormers. 2, 3 and
4 light casements with diamond leaded lights. Two brick chimneys, one with
twin shafts on rectangular base with tiled offsets. Boarded door with central
narrow light. Good, complete original interior with solid joinery details,
interesting elm plank doors and outstanding hand-wrought iron door furniture.
Living room with recessed inglenook with beaten copper chimney hood. Exposed
ceiling beads. Good oak staircase with open balusters and newel post.
Bedrooms with original built-in cupboards. House designed for W J Dent the
publisher, whose printing division bias established in 1906 to become one of the
new factories of Letchworth.
