Description

878/0/10041 Gates, gatepiers and section of curved
16-JAN-03 wall to Margate Cemetery

GV II

Gates, gatepiers and linking sections of curved wall. Circa 1856, contemporary with the two cemetery chapels at Margate Cemetery and possibly also designed by Birch of Margate, builder G Hadlow. Cast iron gates comprising central double carriage gates divided by two square cast iron gatepiers from similar cast-iron single pedestrian gates. The gates have spear rails, midrail and dograils and there are further ornamental panels of fleur de lys and quatrefoils. The piers have cross motifs. Adjoining the pedestrian gates are two tall stock brick piers with gabled stone caps. Sections of attached flanking curved brick wall about three feet high with stone coping link to stock brick piers with pyramidal stone caps.
