ISLEY CUM LANGLEY
Wartoft Grange

II

House, now two dwellings. Mid C18, incorporating fragments of earlier building, with early C19 extension and some C20 alterations. Red brick on ashlar plinth. C20 blue tile roof replacing Swithland slates. Brick gable copings, brick chimneys to left and between right bays. Two storeys and attic; three bays. Windows have altered glazing but all except ground floor centre retain original segmental arches. Ground floor has blocked window to left, C19 four-pane sash with marginal glazing to centre, and C20 casement to right. First floor also has C20 wooden casements, all with glazing bars and asymmetrical top-lights. Between left bays is a C20 door with rectangular fanlight and a narrow two-light casement above. Outbuilding projecting from right end is not of special architectural interest. Behind this, attached to right end of house, is a three-storey C19 extension with cogged eaves and three-light barred wooden casements, that to first floor a horizontal sash. Board door to left. Rear of original block has rubblestone outshot to part, extended in brick to full length C20.

Interior: main door leads into narrow hall with moulded floor joists and shaped splat baluster staircase. Centre bay has ovolo-moulded spine beam with small end brackets, and moulded joists. Right bay has a re-used half of a moulded spine beam, and simple wide joists. Large fireplaces. C19 extension has large kitchen with slab for cheese-press and traces of large fireplace and bake-ovens.
