Mechanics' Institution, dated 1878,by George Baines. Sandstone ashlar
with punched faces, slate roof. Rectangular plan, 5 bays x 3 bays.
Two storeys, with symmetrical facades to both streets. Willow Street
facade 5 bays, with moulded string course, moulded cornice, pilastered
corners at 1st floor, central round-headed doorway lettered in spandrels
"AD" "1878" with pedimented Ionic architrave; sashed windows with glazing
bars. St. James' Street facade has wide open-pedimented centre bay with
a modified Venetian window at 1st floor, 2 sashed windows flanking this,
and 4 at ground floor. Interior: ground floor room to St. James' Street
has plastered beams with modillions and windows with panelled splays
and eared wooden architraves. (Item included for group value with
Carnegic Library (St. James St. q.v.) adjoining on left).
