Dispensary, now doctors' surgery. 1897; by William Doubleday. Ashlar. Steeply pitched slate roof with crested ridge tiles. Ashlar axial and lateral stacks with moulded weathered caps. PLAN: Corner site with polygonal turret on corner. C16 French chateau style. EXTERIOR: 2 storeys and attic. 7-bay NE front to Coventry Road, 4-bay NW side to Henshaw Road. Tall moulded plinth, ground and first floors with two superimposed orders of twin pilasters with lozenge panels and foliage capitals, enriched strings and eaves cornice. Frieze between has small roundels containing little cartouches. The left-hand bay has a large moulded round-arch doorway with a fanlight, panelled double-doors and shields above with date. 2-light windows with moulded shafts to the mullions and transoms radiused at the top corners; sashes without glazing bars. On the corner a large polygonal turret with similar superimposed order, the eaves cornice breaking forwards over the pilasters and with polygonal slate spire with lead-clad cap with wrought-iron finial. Large gabled stone dormers with similar pilasters and windows and with stone finials. The right-hand return has 3-storey gabled bay window to left bay with integral flanking chimney stacks. INTERIOR: Plan basically unaltered. Staircase with moulded mahogany handrail and turned balusters. Much of the joinery remains intact including panelled doors and chimneypieces. Encaustic tile floor in entrance hall. Later suspended ceilings might conceal ceiling cornices. SOURCE: Birmingham building plans, 1895.
