Wall, approx 80m in Denmark Terrace and approx 50m in Temple
Gardens. 1819. Built in connection with the house which is now
part of Brighton and Hove High School for Girls (qv), for
Thomas Read Kemp. Red and yellow brick set in English bond,
knapped flints, cobbles and stucco. In Temple Gardens the wall
consists of a layer of knapped flint, then 3 courses of red
brick, and then cobbles set in mortar in panels of yellow
brick and a coping of cement; in Denmark Terrace there is the
same design but without the bottom layer of flint. At either
end of the wall in Temple Gardens are round domed piers with a
cornice covered in stucco; in Denmark Terrace there are 2
entrances, each flanked by 2 pairs of square piers detailed as
for the wall, with stucco cornice and antefixae, some of whose
faces are decorated with the heads of lions; one such entrance
also in Temple Gardens and one further square pier forming an
additional entrance with the western round pier. A plaque by
the south gate in Denmark Terrace commemorates TR Kemp. The
wall has been considerably renewed.
