Description

BRIGHTON

TQ3203NW ST GEORGE'S ROAD
577-1/48/794 (South side)
Gate way and attached wall leading
to Portland Mews

GV II

Includes: End wall to No.87 (remainder of No.87 not included)
ST GEORGE'S ROAD.
Entrance gate to Portland Mews. Early C19. Stucco. Access to
the Mews by a flat-arched entrance with broad architrave.
There is a continuous dentil cornice across the whole, the
cornice stepping out to form a capital over quoin strips at
either end. In the centre of gate, above entrance, is a plain
parapet with recessed panel bearing the words "Portland Mews";
short piers to either side. Running from the latter to similar
piers at the far ends of the gate is a balustrade in the form
of a diminutive arcade, which has recently been restored. This
listing applies only to the front wall, the gate and its
features, including end wall to No.11 Portland Place (qv) and
No.87 St George's Road (end wall only listed), and does not
apply to the buildings just inside the gate.
The gate forms a group with Nos 1-25 Portland Place (qv) and
St George's Church (qv).
