Terrace of 8 houses, now houses and flats, and attached
railings. c1836, with later additions and alterations
including late C20 attic dormers. Architect, John George
Jackson of Leamington. Reddish-brown brick with painted stucco
facade, Welsh slate roof and cast-iron balconies and railings.
PLAN: double-depth with side entrances.
EXTERIOR: 3 storeys with attics and basements, 14 first-floor
windows, 4 storeys with basements and 3 first-floor windows to
right, with 2-storey, 1 first-floor window addition to left.
Main range stepped in three stages. Stucco detailing includes
rustication to ground floor throughout; first-floor band
surmounted by Tuscan pilasters to first and second floor to
ends and between each house, that to right is to full-height;
crowning frieze; cornice, missing to No.3, blocking course.
First floor: tall 6/9 sashes throughout, blind boxes to Nos 1,
2, 3 and 8. To left range a tripartite window with 6/6 between
2/2 sashes. All first-floor windows have floating cornices.
Second floor: 6/6 sashes with sills, those 3 to right with
feet. Windows to first and second floors in plain reveals, and
with tooled architraves to all except No.4.
Third floor (to right): 3/6 sashes in plain reveals with
pilaster strips between each window. Stepped frieze, cornice,
blocking course, to each unit.
Ground floor (main range): entrances to right, except that to
No.8 to right return. 6 and 7 roll-edged steps to 3- and
4-panel doors, some part-glazed and Nos 4, 5, 6 and 7 with
margin-lights, all with overlights, some with glazing-bars, in
plain reveals and with tooled architraves and cornices on
brackets.
Windows: to left extension a canted bay with four 4/4 sashes.
Main range: Nos 1, 2 and 3 have canted bay with 6/6 between
2/2 sashes and fluted Corinthian columns, frieze and cornice;
to Nos 4, 5, 6 and 7 are tripartite windows: 6/6 between 2/2
sashes in rusticated reveals, with sills and rusticated flat
arches; then three 2/2 sashes in rusticated reveals and with

flat, channelled arches. Entrance to No.8 to return a 6-panel
door with overlight. Basement has 8/8 and 3/6 sashes,
otherwise blocked. Tall end stacks with cornices to each
house. First-floor balconies to Nos 1 and 3 have
double-heart-and-anthemion motif balustrades; No.2 has circle
motif; Nos 4 to 7 have continuous balcony with Carron Company
double-heart-and-anthemion motif and balcony dividers to each
dwelling. Similar balcony to No.8.
INTERIOR: not inspected.
SUBSIDIARY FEATURES: railings to sides of steps and to front
with gates have spear-head finials.
HISTORICAL NOTE: Jackson was a pupil of PF Robinson of London
who designed Clarendon Square (qv).
