Terrace of 6 houses, now shops, flats and offices. Numbered
right to left, described left to right. c1826 with later C19
and C20 shop fronts. Pinkish-brown brick with painted stucco
facades, concealed and Welsh slate roofs, and cast-iron
railings and balconies.
EXTERIOR: 3 storeys, 6 first-floor windows, 1 to each house.
Between each house a recessed strip to full height. First
floor has 16-pane French windows with 4-pane side-lights and
divided overlights in plain reveals, all except to left angle
within wider, elliptically-arched recess with tooled surround.
Second floor: 2 windows to each unit except that to left has
one window to front facade and one to chamfered angle: eight
6/6 sashes and 2 casements, all in plain reveals, with tooled
architraves, and sills. Continuous cornice, blocking course
and copings.
Ground floor: many side entrances to dwellings remain, some
with additional or replacement central entrances to shop
fronts; to left, entrance to angle a part-glazed door with
overlight in tooled surround with keystone; projecting shop
front with decorative pilasters to angles.
Then pair of entrances to Nos 30 & 28, alike: 3 roll-edged
steps to 3-panel door with overlight with decorative glazing
bars, with shared, distyle Doric porch with entablature.
Otherwise, to next three dwellings, steps to 4-panel doors
with divided overlights, in surrounds with Doric pilasters and
entablature.
To No.24 a projecting shop front has pillars to angles and
central entrance with fanlight. To right a projecting glazed
shop front with recessed part-glazed door. Hipped roof. Tall
ridge stacks, some with cornices. To left angle, first floor,
a balconette.
Returns: to left, ground floor has plate-glass window between
narrow pilasters, entablature. First floor has two 6/6 sashes,

one with tooled surround; second floor has 2/2 sash with
margin-lights and 6/6 sash with tooled surround. Third floor
has 3/6 sash with tooled surround. All windows in plain
reveals and with sills. Cornice and parapet.
To right (Portland House, 29 Portland Street): 3 storeys with
attic and basement. First floor: to centre are part-glazed
French windows, between 6/6 sashes. Second floor has 3/6
sashes. Ground floor has 6/6 sashes. Openings have tooled
architraves and sills. Central entrance, 7 steps to
part-glazed, 4-panel door with overlight with decorative
glazing bars, within porch of 2 pillars with panels and
engaged pilasters, frieze, cornice. Basement has glazed door,
cornice, blocking course. Attic dormers, end and ridge stacks.
First floor has central balcony with figure-of-eight and Greek
key motif balustrade.
INTERIOR: not inspected.
SUBSIDIARY FEATURES: to No.26 Regent Street and to Portland
House attached railings to left side of steps have bars with
anthemion finials.
HISTORICAL NOTE: Regent Street was laid out c1808-1814, and
the first terrace built in 1814; Portland Street was built
c1826-36; this terrace corresponds in design with the earliest
houses on Portland Street, Nos 10 & 12 (qqv).
