Pates Almshouses

Almshouses. Dated 1811 in pediment. Ashlar with pinkish-brown
brick and red brick dressings to rear, hipped slate roof.
EXTERIOR: 2 storeys, 3 bays: 5 windows arranged 1:3:1, with
central pedimented breakforward. Casement windows throughout
in plain reveals and with sills. Central entrance, double
part-glazed doors with pediment on corbels. First-floor band.
Frieze, cornice and blocking course. Plaque in pediment:
'Pates / 1811'. Rear: ground floor openings have flat arches
of red rubbed brick.
INTERIOR: not inspected.
HISTORICAL NOTE: Founded by 1574 by Richard Pate, the
preceding almshouses were originally situated on the High
Street until 1811.
