Villa. 1834, probably by Robert Stokes, architect. Ashlar, now
stuccoed, over brick with concealed roof, ashlar end stacks.
EXTERIOR: 2 storeys on basement with attics to 'gables', 3
first-floor windows. Horizontal rustication to ground floor
drawn into voussoirs over windows; first-floor band;
architrave, frieze, cornice and blocking course. First floor
has 6/6 sashes in plain reveals and with sills. Ground floor
has outer tripartite 1/1 sashes with cambered heads. Basement
has 6/6 sashes. Flight of roll-edged steps to central entrance
a 4-panel, part-glazed door with side-lights and cambered
overlight with margin glazing; in distyle Doric porch with
triglyphs and metopes, guttae to cornice, blocking course.
Right return has 1/1 and 2 x 6/6 sashes (one in attic),
otherwise blind openings.
INTERIOR: not inspected.
HISTORICAL NOTE: built as part of the development of this area
undertaken for Joseph Pitt in 1825-42, the general layout
being designed by the architect John Forbes. In 1851 this
house was sold to William, Earl Fitzhardinge of Berkeley
Castle for ยป1000 as his Cheltenham residence and as a home for
his mistress, Jane Barker.
