Includes: No.9 CLARENCE PARADE.
Terrace of 4 houses, now bank and building society. c1820-30
with c1970s ground-floor shop fronts to Nos 22 and 24; No.26
retains some original ground-floor features. Brick with stucco
facades and concealed roof; brick and stucco party-wall
stacks; iron window guards.
EXTERIOR: 3 storeys, 8 first floor windows arranged 1:8:1;
angles are curved on plan and each have window, with 2-window
right return to No.26. Stucco decoration includes five 3/4
fluted Doric columns to No.26 (including to return), 2 of
which demarcate entrance at angle, surmounted by continuous
entablature throughout which continues around corners;
second-floor plat-band interrupted by tall Doric pilasters
through first and second floors to angles and a pair to each
party-wall, entablature with blocking course; incised
'Greek-key' motif around first- and second-floor windows.
First and second floors have 6/6 sashes throughout, except
those to angle are blind. Entrance to No.26: 2 roll-edged
steps curved on plan to C20 door with divided overlight.
Raised ridges to party-walls. Left return: 2+4 first-floor
windows. 6/6 sashes and blind openings. Glazed ground-floor
shop front.
INTERIOR: not inspected.
SUBSIDIARY FEATURES: first-floor balconies to main facade have
scroll motif with side panels with inverse teardrop and star
motif.
HISTORICAL NOTE: apparently shown on Merrett's Map of 1834.
