Pair of houses and walls adjoining. c1824-8. Architect
probably John Forbes. Ashlar over brick with brick and stucco
party-wall stacks and slate roof. Double-depth plan with outer
EXTERIOR: 2 storeys with basement and attics with
single-storey entrance bays set back to sides and walls
adjoining. Ashlar detailing includes first-floor band; 2
crowning incised bands, moulded string, frieze and cornice
with stepped blocking course. Ground and first floors have 6/6
sashes in plain reveals and with sills. Those to ground floor
have wider, segmental-arched openings and blind boxes with
lozenge motif. Basements have 4/8 sashes where original. End
entrances: renewed steps to 6-panel doors (the upper panels
raised and fielded) and overlights (that to right with
margin-lights), in plain reveals. First-floor band continues
over entrance. Low walls adjoining have plank doors and
INTERIOR: noted as having original joinery including panelled
SUBSIDIARY FEATURES: coped walls abut to sides.
HISTORICAL NOTE: the street was originally known as
Montpellier Retreat. Forbes was architect to the Pittville
Estate c1835-6. Revd L Lewis lived at No.8 c1845.
