Pair of semi-detached villas, now flats (No.19) and surgery
(No.21), with attached area railings. c1839-40. Possibly by
Robert Stokes, architect. For James Creed. Stucco over brick
with concealed roof; brick and stucco party-wall and left end
stacks.
EXTERIOR: 3 storeys with basement and 2-storey single entrance
bays set back to sides, 1 + 5 + 1 first-floor windows, the
central 3 windows break forward. Stucco detailing includes
horizontal rustication to ground floor of breakforward, drawn
into voussoirs over windows, also to ground floor of entrance
bay at left; first-floor band above rustication; tooled
architraves to first-floor windows and to outer windows of
main range to ground floor which also have cornices on console
brackets; continuous moulded frieze and cornice above first
floor (cornice missing at left); crowning frieze and cornice.
Ground and first floors have 6/6 sashes, taller to ground
floor; ground-floor windows at left have blind boxes; second
floor has 3/6 sashes; basement has 8/8 sashes; all in plain
reveals and with sills. End entrances: flights of steps to
4-panel doors with overlights, that to right in solid porch
with paired Tuscan columns, frieze and cornice with blocking
course.
INTERIOR: noted as having retained original joinery including
shutters to windows; plasterwork includes moulded cornices and
ceiling roses.
SUBSIDIARY FEATURES: Spearhead area railings to return at
left. Balustrades to sides of top step have stylized heart
motif.
HISTORICAL NOTE: built as part of the development of this area
undertaken for Joseph Pitt in 1825-42, the general layout
being designed by the architect John Forbes. Originally 1 and
2 Berkeley Villas.
All the villas along Pittville Lawn form a distinguished
architectural group.
