Terrace of 6 houses with attached forecourt railings to Nos
20, 24 and 26. c1839-40. Stucco over brick with concealed roof
and brick and stucco end and party-wall stacks; iron railings
and window guards.
EXTERIOR: 2 storeys, 16 + 1 first-floor windows (2 to left
house, then 3 per house with that to right in curved end).
Left dwelling breaks forwards; right dwelling curved on plan
at right. Stucco detailing includes horizontal rustication to
ground floor and voussoirs over openings except at left;
continuous first-floor band; crowning entablature. Mainly 6/6
sashes where original, with some 2/2 horizontal-pane sashes
(to Nos 18 and 24), all in plain reveals and with sills.
Basements have 8/8, 3/6 and 6/6 sashes where original.
Entrances: that to No. 18 to right and with distyle Doric
porch, otherwise to left, flights of roll-edged steps to
3-panel doors with overlights, some with margin-lights.
INTERIOR: not inspected.
SUBSIDIARY FEATURES: arrowhead forecourt railings, and to
sides of steps, with urn finials to stanchion. Window boxes to
ground floor at right have scroll motif.
HISTORICAL NOTE: built as part of the development of this area
undertaken for Joseph Pitt in 1835-42, the general layout
being designed by the architect John Forbes.
