Fountain and statues. Inaugurated 1893. Designed by Joseph
Hall, the Borough Engineer and executed by RL Boulton and
Sons, Cheltenham. Portland stone, overpainted. Neptune drawn
by 4 sea-horses, flanked by tritons blowing conches. Set on
ranged oval base encircled by shallow steps leading to pool.
Enclosed by stone balustrade with carved urns. Based on Rome's
Trevi Fountain.
HISTORICAL NOTE: The Promenade was laid out in 1818 as a
tree-lined avenue connecting the Colonnade in the High Street
to the Sherborne Spa (on the site of the Queen's Hotel) (qv).
