attached area railings to No.4

GV II

Terrace of 3 houses, now houses and offices, with attached
area railings to No.4. Numbered right to left, described left
to right. c1820-34 with later additions and alterations
including c1960s ground-floor bow windows to Nos 2 and 3.
Stucco over brick with concealed roof, tall brick party-wall
stacks and wrought- and iron railings.
EXTERIOR: 2 storeys, to left on basement, 9 first-floor
windows (3 per house). Stucco detailing includes first-floor
band; crowning entablature and blocking course. 6/6 sashes
where original, centre window to first-floor of central and
right dwellings is blind; basement has 10/10 sash; all in
plain reveals and with sills. Plate glass bow windows to
centre and right. Right entrances: flights of steps to 6-panel
doors (that to No.2 replaced) with sidelights and overlights
with lozenge glazing bars (missing to No.2).
INTERIOR: noted as retaining original plasterwork, painted
Regency fireplace and original joinery, No.3 has narrow
open-well staircase with stick balusters and wreathed
handrail, otherwise not inspected.
SUBSIDIARY FEATURES: area railings to left have X-motif,
pointed railings to sides of steps to No.4 have bars and
dogbars.
HISTORICAL NOTE: shown as built on Merrett's Map of 1834.
Forms a group with Madame Wright's, 1 Ormond Place (qv) and
Nos 5-8 (consec) Ormond Terrace, Regent Street (qv).
