Pair of semi-detached villas and attached railings. c1826-30.
Stucco over brick with hipped slate roof, central stucco stack
and iron railings. Double-depth plan with side hallways and
full-height service ranges to rear.
EXTERIOR: 2 storeys on basement, 6 first-floor windows (3:3).
Stucco detailing includes horizontal rustication to ground
floor with flat arches over openings and first-floor band;
tooled elliptically-arched architraves with sills on feet to
first floor windows; crowning moulded band; wide eaves on
brackets with incised panels between. First floor has
elliptically-arched 2/2 horizontal-pane sashes; ground floor
has lugged 1/1 sashes; all in plain reveals. End entrances:
flights of 4 roll-edged steps to set-back, 3-panel doors
(upper panels raised and fielded, lower panel flush) with
sidelights and overlight. Basement has 6/6 sashes. Rear
retains 6/6 sashes. Returns have tall 2/2 horizontal-pane
staircase sashes.
INTERIOR: retains original joinery including panelled
shutters, No.3 has dogleg staircase with rod and central
bobbin balusters and wreathed handrail and is reputed to
retain original plasterwork, otherwise not inspected.
SUBSIDIARY FEATURES: ground-floor balcony on plinths and
railings to sides of steps have alternately embellished and
scrolled rods.
Nos 3-19 (odd) and 4-18 (even) (qqv) form a group.
