Stable range, now hall of residence for Cheltenham College
(qv). c1823 with mid-late C20 conversion. Stucco over ashlar
and brick, ashlar parapet and columns; with slate roof.
U-plan.
EXTERIOR: 2 storeys, 6 first-floor windows to main range with
2-storey projecting wings, that to left with 1 first-floor
window. Entrance facade has central ground-floor loggia with 6
slender iron Doric columns. Single-storey projecting range to
end of right wing. Stucco detailing includes full-height
pilasters with sunk panels to ends of wings the capitals of
which form part of continuous crowning entablature, low
parapet; set back behind parapet to main range a further
ashlar parapet with central breakforward and continuous
entablature, raised upshot to centre. Entrance at left of main
range a 6-panel door; further similar entrance to right wing.
Ground floor has 6/6 sashes. First floor has 3/6 sashes.
Single-storey range to right has central opening with 2 Doric
columns. Rear has 2:5:2 first-floor windows and slight
breakforwards to ends with similar pilasters and entablature.
INTERIOR: not inspected.
HISTORICAL NOTE: formerly the stable range to Thirlestaine
House, No.138 Bath Road (qv), now part of Cheltenham College.
The 1983 List noted that the stable block had 'an excellent
cupola (a picture of which is in Richardson and Eberlain's
"Smaller English Country House of the Later Renaissance",
though it is erroneously called Pittville Spa), with small
Ionic columns.
