GV II

Villa. 1834-5, for Col William Larkins Watson of the East
India Company. Stucco over brick with concealed roof, left end
brick stack and wrought-iron verandah. Double depth plan with
entrance to right return.
EXTERIOR: 2 storeys on basement, 4 first-floor windows, those
2 to centre in full-height bow. Ground and first floors have
6/6 sashes, taller to ground floor; all in plain reveals and
with sills; blind boxes to ground-floor windows. Basement has
8/8 sashes. Continuous crowning frieze and dentil cornice.
Right return has 6/6 sashes; entrance to right in solid porch
with Ionic columns in antis, outer Doric pillars, entablature
and blocking course, windows with margin-lights and stained
glass to sides of porch and within a 4-panel door.
INTERIOR: not inspected.
HISTORICAL NOTE: built as part of the development of this area
undertaken for Joseph Pitt in 1825-42, the general layout
being designed by the architect John Forbes.
All the listed buildings in Wellington Square form a good
group around a central grassed area.
