Hotel. Mid C18, altered and extended early C19, with further
mid C19 alterations. The wing at right-angles to the river was
added after 1807 and the construction of the new town bridge
(qv). Red brick, stucco, slate roofs. L-plan.
EXTERIOR: main front of 3 storeys plus attics, 7 bays with
quoins, heavy moulded and dentilled cornice, parapet with
pierced ovals. Off-centre elliptical carriage archway with
keystone, plain pilasters and entablature. To left a small
shop window with moulded surround, cornice and ramped base. To
right 2 plain sashes with pedimented moulded surrounds and
ramped bases and a recessed doorway.
To 1st and 2nd floor 7 plain sashes with moulded surrounds,
the upper ones with tabbed sills. To the attic 4 modern dormer
windows. The taller added wing is 3-storey, 3-bay in
quasi-Jacobean style with balustraded parapet and dentilled
cornice. Dentilled entablature to ground floor and deep band
between 1st and 2nd floor with roundel and acanthus ornament.
The bays to each floor are marked by pilasters, fluted
Corinthian to ground floor and Doric with marked entasis
above. To ground floor a modern entrance to left and 2 plain
sashes to right. To 1st floor, 3 tall full height divided
sashes. To 2nd floor 3 semi-circular-headed sashes. All
windows have moulded surround, those to the top floor are
decorated with roundels.
INTERIOR: not inspected.
HISTORY: the original White Hart was demolished early C19 for
the New Bridge Street, the present building was previously the
"Unicorn".
