2 semi-detached houses (designed to look like single large
house). c1830-40 with later additions and alterations. Brick
with painted stucco dressings, hipped slate roof, 2 west
end-wall and 2 party-wall ridge stacks with oversailing
details and pots. Double-depth plan, central entrance gives
access to No.29, No.28 accessed from early C20 2-storey wing
with hipped slate roof set back to right return. Single-storey
service ranges to rear. Symmetrical facade, 3 storeys and
cellar. 3 first-floor windows. Stucco detailing includes
Tuscan-style porch and tooled architrave with semi-circular
head to central doorway; pilastered and broken pedimented
doorcase to east-wing. Centre first-floor is French window
with margin-glazing, otherwise 8/8 sashes to main facade
except second-floor which are 4/4; all in plain reveals with
sills and flat gauged brick arches. Flight of 4 steps to
4-panel central entrance door, upper panels glazed, lower pair
flush-beaded; panelled reveals; fanlight in petal design. East
wing has 2 first-floor windows, 1/1 sashes. Flight of 5 steps
to 6-panel entrance door, top pair raised and fielded, centre
pair glazed and bottom panels flush-beaded.
SUBSIDIARY FEATURES: Central first-floor window has individual
balcony with cast-iron balusters in scrolled-heart design
similar to those used at No.23 (qv) St. George's Square.
HISTORICAL NOTE: These houses of similar design to Nos 30 and
31 (qv) St. George's Square.
