2 semi-detached houses (designed to look like single large
house), now used as offices. c1830-40 with later, extensive
additions and alterations. Brick with painted stucco
dressings, hipped slate roof. Stacks to west end-wall and
party-wall, some rebuilt and altered.
Double-depth plan, central entrance now accesses Nos 30 and
31. 2-storey entrance wing set back to right-return, entrance
to No.30 retained in eastern return. Symmetrical facade, 3
storeys and cellar. 3 first-floor windows. Stucco detailing
includes sills, plain eaves frieze, Doric-style porch and door
surround, tooled architrave to side entrance. 3 first-floor
windows; all windows 8/8 sashes except second-floor which are
4/4; all in plain reveals with sills and flat gauged brick
arches. 6 renewed steps to centre entrance, 4-panel door,
upper pair raised and fielded, lower pair flush-beaded,
panelled reveals, fanlight with radial glazing bars. Flight of
6 stone steps to side entrance, door matches front elevation,
radial pattern fanlight with margin glazing, arch soffit
panelled.
West-return (Barbourne Road) elevation: 4 first-floor windows,
8/8 sashes to ground- and first-floor, 4/4 to second-floor,
all in plain reveals with sills. Later flat roof extension
(now shops) to west obscures basement level. Interior retains
shutters.
HISTORICAL NOTE: These houses of similar design to Nos 28 and
29 (qv) St. George's Square.
