House, now restaurant and offices. c1700 with later additions,
and alterations of c1930, and with shop front c1980s. 3
storeys plus attic, 5 first-floor windows. Stucco over brick
with plain tile roof, hipped at right. Stucco details include
fluted Doric pilasters through first and second floors
surmounted by pulvinated frieze and shaped cornice; 6 armorial
shields, probably dating from c1930 between ground and first
floors and 2 to first floor; windows all have tooled
architraves and sills. 6/6 sashes in near-flush frames
throughout, many retaining thick, ovolo-moulded glazing bars.
Ground floor has renewed traditional-style shop front and
central entrance.
INTERIOR: Early C18 closed string, open newel staircase with
shaped handrail and rod-on-bobbin balusters, panelled dado.
Stained glass to staircase window with portrait heads. Plaster
decoration of c1930 to lanterns of ground-floor restaurant and
to upper floors. Landing has rope-moulded frieze and central
plaster roses. First-floor has axial beam embellished with
grape frieze plaster decoration; axial beams to front part,
cornices with foliate mouldings and central ceiling roses.
Additional plaster moulding includes panels of fleurs-de-lys,
ships, lozenges, oak eaves, dragons and knights. Stone
fireplace to front right room in Tudor style surmounted by
plaster panel showing Queen Elizabeth I waving as two ships
leave harbour. Rope moulded surrounds to windows.
HISTORICAL NOTE: Berkeley's Hospital and No.19 The Foregate
form a group with Nos 1-6 (consecutive) and Nos 57-66
(consecutive) Foregate Street (qqv). To rear (and now
incorporated into ground floor) a conservatory with moulded
panels to skylights.
