Manufactory, now wholesale jewellers. Late C19 with late C20 alterations. Red brick with terracotta detailing, shallow pitched roof with tall gable stacks and a slate-covered roof set behind a shallow parapet.
PLAN: L-shaped plan on street corner plot, with entrance within splayed junction of the 2 street frontage ranges
EXTERIOR: Hall Street frontage of 2 storeys and 4 bays, rising from a shallow moulded plinth band. 3 ground floor windows, that to the left a wide 4-light display window, and to the right, 2, 2-light windows all with overboarded transom lights. The openings have shallow arched heads and an undulating string course above, as a linked drip mould. Above, a heavier string course defines the upper edge of a flat storey band. 2 upper floor windows, 2 paired openings to the left and 2 to the right, with stilted arch heads, advanced fluted keyblocks and hood moulds linked to the upper of 2 string courses at window transom level. Complex dentilled eaves cornice below shallow parapet with moulded coping. Entrance to splayed corner with shallow brick pilaster surround, imposts and stepped semi-circular arch with fluted keyblock supporting curved corbelled base of oriel turret. This has a stepped cill panel, with 3 recessed narrow light separated by slender terracotta piers. Moulded heads to window recesses, below deeply moulded cornice and stepped terracotta dome. Kenyon Street elevation of 5 bays, with stacked window openings retaining original transomed 2 light frames and arranged 2:3 with the wider windows to the right. Window openings detailed as on Hall Street elevation. 3 basement lights to right hand end, as ground slopes away.
INTERIOR: Main entrance with stick baluster stair rising from the rear of the entrance lobby.
Forms a group with No. 42 Caroline Street (q.v.).
A prominently-sited late C19 manufactory, which graphically demonstrates the evolution of the consciously - designed manufactory of the late C19, from the evolved, adaptive works as represented by the premises of Pickering and Mayell opposite.
