Detached villa. c1824 by John Pinch.
MATERIALS: Limestone ashlar, hipped slate roof with wide bracketed eaves and moulded stacks to sides and rear.
PLAN: Double depth with two storeys, one window, set back side wings and a further set back wing to the right.
EXTERIOR: Two storeys and basement; symmetrical front with a three bay central block, flanked on either side with entrance bays (one functional, one blind). The central three window main block has an eaves band, clasping pilasters, and cornices on consoles to the ground floor. six/six pane sash windows. The side wings have returned low coped parapets, cornices, continuous sill bands, ground floor cornices and cornices on consoles over doors with two circular panels to the centre. Six/six pane sash windows to the right return. French windows to garden front with decorative cast iron balconies.
INTERIOR: Not inspected, but recorded by Bath Preservation Trust in 1989. This notes an oval stone staircase with iron balusters and a mahogany handrail; numerous reeded architraves, original marble fireplaces with hourglass grates, high quality plasterwork. Basement formerly converted to a separate unit.
ADDITIONAL FEATURES: Front wall with railings and pediment-capped piers.
HISTORY: A fine late Georgian villa forming part of the upward development of Bathwick Hill. The symmetrical elevation owes something to the emerging semi-detached house type, with its flanking entrance bays to either side. The date is taken from the conveyance from the Earl of Pulteney¿s estate. The drawings for this and other houses close by came from the Darlington Estate Office, to which Pinch was surveyor.
