House, now flats. c1786 with mid C19 porch.
MATERIALS: Limestone ashlar to front, rubble to rear, double pile parapeted mansard roof, hipped to left to front and rear, Welsh slate to front and rear, with coped party wall with two ashlar stacks to right, ashlar stack to centre left of front range. Building at angle of Portland Place has main facade facing north with narrow return to left facing triangular green at centre of Portland Place, staircase to centre front.
EXTERIOR: Main facade has three storeys, attic and basement, four-window range. First floor has to left six/six-sash in plain reveal paired with similar sash on return face to left, to centre partially blind window to staircase has sash below at half-landing level, six-panes over C19 leaded glazing, two six/six-sashes in plain reveals to right and far right. Second floor has six/six-sash in plain reveal to left paired with similar sash on return face to left, similar sashes to centre, right and far right. Ground floor has to left six/six-sash in plain reveal paired with similar sash on return face to left with continuous stone sill, two similar sashes in plain reveals with stone sills to right and far right, to centre porch built out over crossover has six-panel door with flush beaded and fielded panels with round headed single pane overlight in chamfered reveal with moulded impost and archivolt, with one pennant step and footscraper attached in reveal to right, flanked by Tuscan pilasters with full entablature with moulded cornice and blocking course over, continued to left and right sides, each side has round headed window with moulded architrave and stone sill, to left plate glass sash, to right smaller with fixed leaded lights. Basement has two paired six/six-sashes in plain reveals with continuous stone sills to left and right of infilled crossover, to left one sash on return face to left, to right bottom left sash blind, stone area steps partly refaced in concrete with wrought iron handrail. One double and two single dormers with six/six-sashes, those to single dormer on return face to left with horns. Band course over ground floor, weathered sill bands to first and second floors, modillion eaves cornice and coped parapet continuous with No.20 Portland Place (qv). Rear elevation has three six/six-sashes to each of ground, first and second floors, one double and one single dormer with plate glass and three/three-sashes.
INTERIOR: Not inspected.
SUBSIDIARY FEATURES: Attached wrought iron railings and gate with urn tops on limestone bases.
HISTORY: See entry for 1-10 Portland Place. This was the home of Captain Matthews from c1770-1820. He fought the famous duel with Richard Brinsley Sheridan over Elizabeth Linley (see No.1 Pierrepont Place qv) in 1772.
