House forming the right hand termination of this terrace of eighteen houses. 1823-1825. By John Pinch the Elder.
MATERIALS: Limestone ashlar, shallow pitched roof unseen with paired dormers to front and one to right return, and two ridge stacks.
PLAN: Double depth plan.
EXTERIOR: Three storeys with concealed attic and basement; symmetrical three-window entrance front at right angles to street; two bay return to Bathwick Hill slightly stepped back from Nos 1-17 Raby Place (qv). Coped parapet, cornice and frieze, clasping pilasters to quoins, ground floor platband and banded rustication to ground floor, six/six-pane sash windows. Entrance to No.17 Raby Place (qv) in rear of left return. Windows to sides of upper floors and ground floor right of entrance front are blind. Three/six-pane sash window to second floor and six/six-pane sash to first floor centre over enclosed porch with slightly pedimented piers to stone balustraded parapet, cornice and dentil frieze over tall overlight and double doors. On the second floor of the right return is a Gothic two-light pointed arched opening with coloured glass, set within a flat arched recess. To right, a low two storey wing with coped parapet, cornice, three/three-pane sash window to first floor and barred sliding sash window to ground floor; several overlaid painted advertising inscriptions between ground and first floor on front facade.
INTERIOR: Not inspected.
This house stands directly over Great Western Railway tunnel of 1840 (qv); a connection with Brunel has been suggested. It has undergone extensive restoration in recent years.
