Masonry wall. c1800. Built under supervision of John Rennie, Engineer to Kennet and Avon canal. Coursed and squared limestone blocks, finished more roughly on Sham Castle Lane side. Flat stone coping.
HISTORY: The Kennet and Avon canal was set into hillside as it ran towards the Widcombe flight of locks: these were not opened until 1810, and effected a junction with River Avon. This wall retains the new line of Sham Castle Lane, and dates from the earlier phase of the canal's construction running all the way to Bradford-on-Avon (see also Sydney Gardens).
