GV II

Single house in row. c1795. Possibly by Charles Harcourt Masters.
MATERIALS: Rendered, painted front, slate roofs.
PLAN: Free-standing double depth compact block, linked to adjoining properties by slightly set back lower wings each side, entered from south side, with principal elevation and garden to north.
EXTERIOR: Three storeys and attics, two windows main range, plain sashes. There are two small raking two-light casement dormers, above tripartite plain sashes, with sidelights blank at second floor. First floor sashes are deeper, the outer lights with margin panes, and both windows have iron flower guards. Ground floor has French casement doors each side of central door, with two-light casement in each wing, in which parapet rises to window head height of first floor. Platband above ground floor, lintel, shallow frieze, cornice, blocking course and parapet. Mansard roof with broad plain gables and very deep stacks. Rear three windows wide, with raking dormers above two-light casements with transoms in original sash openings, dropped central stair lights and door under slab hood on solid cheeks. To right lean-to with garage, left has lean-to with door and window.
INTERIOR: Not inspected.
SUBSIDIARY FEATURES: Centred to wall in coursed and squared stone, approx 1.5m high, pair of plain square ashlar gate piers, moulded cappings with double blockings, and stone walls returning at party boundaries.
Part of a very long speculative row, mostly in pairs, this larger single house may represent a late change of plan, and there is no No. 16. The Bath Chronicle advertised the opening of the Devonshire House Academy in this house 14th January 1796.
